The mandate is to represent Sri Lanka at the World Buddhist Congress and protect Theravada Buddhism, to be involved and ensure representation of Sri Lanka in international Buddhist activities, maintain relationships with Buddhist countries, and help each other when necessary such as in natural disasters, participating in international Buddhist conferences and organizing international Buddhist conferences in Sri Lanka.
